Burnt mound in Cleaveragh Demesne

In parkland on the SE side of Sligo Town, located at the edge of a grassy expanse bordered to E by woodland. This burnt mound was discovered in 2008 during archaeological test-trenching in advance of proposed development works (Hackett 2008). It was visible at surface ground level as a semi-circular area at the edge of treeline cover. Excavation of the test trench (G) revealed a concentration (12 x 15m; D 0.3m) of heat-shattered stones (limestone and some sandstone) and charcoal. Burnt mound, likely dating to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. Its presence indicates prehistoric domestic or ritual activity, reflecting early land use in the Sligo area.
