Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bunnoe

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible gap marks the entrance, yet the fort must have admitted life. That hidden door suggests the ringfort still withholds part of its history, waiting for a watcher patient enough to hear what the earth remembers.
Raised subtriangular area (int. dims. c. 36m N-S; c. 22m E-W) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, deep fosse. From SSW-W-NW there are traces of an external bank which is probably a later feature. The fosse has been largely infilled from NE-S-SSW. From NE-E-SE both faces of the bank have been modified and a modern trench dug at the foot of the internal face. Original entrance not recognisable. The interior slopes appreciably from W-E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
