Booley hut in Bunnamohaun

This is one of six huts (MA084-0021---- to MA084-0026----), which occur in a cluster in an exposed site on commonage about halfway up the S flanks of Knockmore. The huts are situated at different levels on a very steep slope over a distance of c. 60m on either side of a small stream. They were most likely associated with booleying activities. This hut lies right on the south-west bank of the stream 25m ESE of MA084-023----. Another hut (MA084-025----) lies slightly upslope on opposite bank of the stream 20.2m to N. It consists of a poorly defined house foundation, roughly oval in plan (4.6m WNW– ESE, 3.6m NNE–SSW). On its upslope side, it is defined from S, through W and N, to NNE by a series of grassy tussocks, possibly the remnants of an enclosing bank. Its limits on the downslope (eastern) side are even fainter, but probably correspond with a slight scarp or break of slope. The interior slopes quite steeply from W to E. No trace of an entrance noted. At least one rabbit burrow is visible, this may partly explain the uneven nature of the site. The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island.
