Bullaun stone in Laragh East

On a S facing slope above the Avonmore River, in an area of recently felled forestry. A granite boulder 1.9m ENE-WSW x c. 1.4m NNW-SSE. Flat topped, level, and partially covered by sod at the N. Stands 45cm high above the ground at the S, where the ground level falls away. The stone features 2 basins. The larger of the two is a circular bowl 34 x 30cm across, and 14-15cm deep. 10cm to the W is a second, shallower bowl 28 x 26cm across, and 7cm deep. Likely dating to the early medieval period, this bullaun stone may have been used for ritual purposes, possibly as a holy water basin associated with a nearby church or monastic site. Such stones often feature in local folklore as having curative or protective properties.
