Birds Island is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland, where a made island still stands inside live water. It may have served as a home, refuge or boundary marker, and that uncertainty keeps the place honest. The name suggests birds, flight and distance, while the crannog suggests craft, patience and human intention. Together they form a small paradox: a built island in fluid country, named for creatures that refuse to be owned.
