Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Belrose Upper

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Belrose Upper holds a rough circular fort thirty-six metres wide, ringed by a two-metre earthen bank and a shallow external ditch. Its southern entrance stands six metres wide but a later fence blocks the way, while cultivation ridges still cross the interior. The site may have served as a ordinary home or a marked boundary before people stopped tending it.
Roughly circular area (33m N-S; 36.7m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 2m), stone-faced in parts; external fosse (D 1.5m) to SE and SW. Entrance to S (Wth 6m), blocked by later earthen fence. Cultivation ridges cross interior on E-W axis. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
