Horse Island, a small island east of Whiddy Island and about half a mile north-west of Gurteen Roe, was another location for a battery, proposed in 1796 and mounting six 24-pounders in 1803, when the earthwork parapets were in need of repair. The island itself has now been denuded of any soil or boulder clay by rising sea levels. All that is left of the island is a mound of large stones which are covered at high tide.

Kerrigan (1995, 199) states: 'Horse Island, a small island east of Whiddy Island and about half a mile north-west of Gurteen Roe, was another location for a battery, proposed in 1796 and mounting six 24-pounders in 1803, when the earthwork parapets were in need of repair'. The following note on this monument was supplied to ASI by the archaeologist Tony Miller on 25th June 2012: "This is listed in the RMP as the site of a battery. I was on the island March 29th 2012 and there were no traces of this monument. The island itself has now been denuded of any soil or boulder clay by rising sea levels. All that is left of the island is a mound of large stones which are covered at high tide."

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
