Galway’s oldest defences are not a single wall but a layered town where stone rooms, street basins and fortified gates appeared across centuries. That is why a small list of monuments can feel incomplete: the interesting part is the development of a port town that kept adapting to trade, danger and domestic life. The best starting point is therefore the relationship between the sites, not the ranking of one building above the others.
