This blue commemorative plaque records: The Voice of Cricket JOHN ARLOTT 1914-1991 Poet, writer and broadcaster. Born in Basingstoke, he was a pupil here at Fairfields from 1920 to 1926 and first saw cricket being played on May's Bounty opposite. John Arlott was a renowned British broadcaster, writer, and poet, best known for his eloquent commentaries on cricket which set a high standard for sports journalism; he developed a lifelong passion for cricket while attending Fairfields School in Basingstoke.
