Midden in Barrow

Midden

What is recorded here

Barrow in County Kerry holds one of seven middens recognised nationally in 1992. Its exact spot resists identification, buried beneath the wide boundary drawn for the group rather than marked as a separate point. That evasion fits a midden, where human waste and broken things blended into soil until nobody could separate ownership from decay.
One of seven middens entered onto the Register of Historic Monuments on 28 February 1992. The precise location of this midden could not be determined from the map showing the boundary of the registration order and therefore it has been assigned a temporary location at the centre of that area. See Iris Oifigiúil, 28th February, 1992, Schedule 1/92.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
