Billy O'Brien of Kilfinnane first noticed the rectangular stone rising from flat Ballyroe Upper pasture, where wide countryside views stretch in every direction. It may belong to prehistoric times, though age and purpose remain unclear. A person could have stood beside it to mark a boundary, honour a loss or simply enjoy the openness, but no written account preserves that life. The stone still stands in ordinary daylight, waiting for someone to remember why it was set there.
