Fairy forts are human places misnamed because people stopped remembering they were human. In Ballynane, a shallow earthen ring still marks a small dwelling on the mountain slope, perhaps a family fold, a seasonal shelter or a forgotten farmstead. The fairies enter only where human memory has thinned. What is forgotten becomes available for imagination, and imagination is not the same as truth.

Internal diam. c. 16 to 18m This roughly circular univallate rath is very poorly preserved. It is situated in steeply-sloping pasture land on the lower NNW slopes of Brickany mountain. The earthen enclosing bank is preserved for a distance of only 11m at SE. It measures 1.2m high internally, .4m high externally and is c. 2.5m wide at base. The remainder of the E half of the site is defined by a 1.3m high scarp, and the bank around the W half of the site is only vaguely discernible. The above description is derived from J.
