The earthen bank in Ballynane still stands nineteen to twenty-two metres across on the lower slopes of Brickany mountain, overlooking the Anascaul valley. Its height changes along the circle, rising nearly two metres internally on the uphill side but appearing taller externally where the ground falls away downhill. That uneven shape suggests the fort was built to suit the hill rather than resist a single attacking line. A person standing inside would have faced the valley through a shallow ditch of soil, not a stone wall, making the place feel less like a fortress and more like a claimed corner of the mountain.

Internal diam. 19m N-S, 22m E-W A roughly circular univallate rath situated on the lower NW slopes of Brickany mountain overlooking the Anascaul valley. The condition of the earthen enclosing bank varies considerably. On the uphill side, it is .9 to 1.9m high internally and c. 1m high externally. On the downhill side, the interior is raised above the external ground level so that, though the bank is .5m high or less above the interior, it is c. 1.5m high externally.
