What is recorded here

Enclosure in Ballynaclogh is a circular boundary in wet pasture near Ballyhurst and Ballyshoneen, with another enclosure nearby and the ringfort Rathaniska a short distance away. It resisted easy sighting on older maps and images, but became faintly visible in later aerial pictures after Bruff’s 1986 survey marked it. The place may have been a working boundary, a shrine, a farmyard mark or a forgotten neighbour to the ringfort. Its elusiveness suggests people once shaped the land, then withdrew the shape from ordinary notice.

In wet pasture 10m S of the townland boundary with Ballyhurst and 15m W of the townland boundary with Ballyshoneen. Enclosure (LI024-231----) 20m to NE. The ringfort (LI024-052----) known as ‘Rathaniska’ lies 35m to ESE. The enclosure is not depicted on historic OSi maps, nor is it visible on OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Tentatively identified by Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 103; AP 4/3672) as a circular enclosure (ext. dims. c. 42m N-S; 48m E-W). The site is faintly visible on the most recent Google Earth orthoimages taken 18/11/2018.
