Castle is a ringwork in Ballyfoyle, County Kilkenny, set at the south end of a ridge between two valleys. Its circular bank, ditch and possible outer edge still mark a defensive place chosen for reach and command. Whoever built it could see far in every direction, and that much visibility would have felt like ownership of the land itself.

On top of the S end of a N-S ridge between two valleys, with very steep slopes to E, S and W. In a very prominent defensive position. There are excellent views in all directions. A raised circular area (diam. 33m) enclosed by a bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 4.2m; Wth at crest 2m; overall Wth 6-8m); fosse (Wth 3.7m; D 1.3m) and intermittent traces of a possible outer bank (ext. H 0.4m; Wth 1.5m) which may be an old field boundary. The location and morphology of the monument suggest that this may be a ringwork rather than a ringfort.
