Settlement deserted

Settlement deserted, medieval

What is recorded here

The first settlement at Bellhill in County Offaly appeared in the fifth century when St Kieran the Elder established it, and it continued through monastic, military and parish phases until the canons faded into a legal footnote. Today the double-banked earthworks, low motte, ruined church base and possible souterrain remain exposed beside the road, marking a place that was repeatedly rebuilt, reused and finally abandoned rather than destroyed in a single event.
Unlocated deserted medieval settlement possible that is described as a village in the townland of Ballyfore c. 1550 (Byrne and Scully n.d. 15-17).

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
