Park House

Detached three-bay single-storey over part raised basement gate lodge, extant 1941, on an F-shaped plan centred on single-bay single-storey flat-roofed projecting porch abutting single-bay single-storey gabled projecting end bay. Renovated, ----. Replacement pitched artificial slate roof on an L-shaped plan centred on flat roof (porch), ridge ties, rendered central chimney stacks on rendered base having corbelled stepped capping, quatrefoil-perforated timber bargeboards to gables on paired "Cavetto"-detailed timber purlins with timber finials to apexes, and uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on exposed timber rafters. Rendered walls. Square-headed central door opening. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing replacement uPVC casement windows replacing six-over-six timber sash windows. Set back from line of road at entrance to grounds of Park House.

A gate lodge not only contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Park House estate, but also clearly illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the estate by Martin Pierce (d. 1907) with the architectural value of the composition, one recalling a contemporary gate lodge at Healthfield House (see 15703713), suggested by such attributes as the compact angular plan form; and the decorative timber work embellishing the roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with quantities of the original fabric: however, the introduction of replacement fittings to most of the openings has not had a beneficial impact on the external expression or integrity of a gate lodge forming part of a self-contained group alongside an adjacent gateway (see 15607036) with the resulting ensemble making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene.
