Athy Quay has loaded and unloaded the Barrow since the late thirteenth century, when boats first travelled from New Ross. It may have stood south of the bridge, near the present Barrow Quay, though no exact line has survived. The river still passes that old trading edge, carrying the town’s goods and memories downstream.

According to Bradley et al. (1986a, vol. 1, 43), 'It is probable that there were quays on the Barrow from at least the late thirteenth century when the passage of boats from New Ross to Athy is first referred to (Mills 1905, 202). Although their precise location is not recorded, a likely location would appear to be S of the bridge (KD035-0220008-) possibly in the vicinity of the present Barrow Quay.'
