Athy Heritage Centre and Museum in Emily Square, County Kildare, Ireland. St. Michael’s parish church, Athy, County Kildare, Ireland. False relief, tapering slab, cross shaft, fleur-de-lys, 13th century, Ireland. One half of a grave marker, broken or discarded, yet still proud enough to show its cross and flower. The top is gone; the bottom remains, holding shape and intent. What is missing does not erase the making. A person lived, died, was remembered, and stone carried that memory before forgetting took the rest.

Formerly in St. Michael’s parish church (KD035-022-014-) but now housed in the Athy Heritage Centre and Museum in Emily Square. The lower half of a tapering slab (L 1.07m; Wth 0.42-0.53m; T 0.16m) is decorated in false relief with the shaft of a cross terminating in a fleur-de-lys. Probably 13th-century in date. Christian gravestone, early medieval period (probably 8th–10th century). The false relief decoration is characteristic of Irish early Christian art and indicates a local tradition of stone carving associated with monastic or parish church sites.
