Linked to Saint Columba, the 6th-century Irish monk who founded the influential monastery on Iona, the site is associated with early Christian pilgrimage and monastic tradition. The nunnery and surrounding holy wells were believed to possess healing properties, with traditions of using the water for spiritual and physical cure.
