Iona Abbey is closely associated with Saint Columba, a 6th-century Irish monk who founded a monastery on the island of Iona, which became a major center of Christian learning and missionary activity in Scotland. The site is linked to numerous traditions of pilgrimage and healing, and the surrounding holy wells and sacred springs are believed to have curative properties in local folklore.
