Duart Castle is the surviving seat of Clan MacLean on the Isle of Mull, first recorded for them in 1350 through a marriage dowry and later confirmed by charter. It resisted Campbell and Cromwellian attacks, lost its keeper to Argyll in 1691, and was stripped to a ruin until a MacLean descendant bought it back in 1911. The castle is not a polished relic but a wounded place that was taken, forgotten, recovered and is still being mended.
