What is recorded here

Ardnasillagh, near Oughterard in County Galway, held human remains discovered in February 1994. The unknown owner left behind only bones, while the living world rushed around the find with Gardaí and university handlers. No witness recorded whether the skeleton lay face up, face down, or curled like a child remembering a dream. That missing image still haunts the place, turning a ordinary burial into an open question about who was buried and how they faced the sky.

In February 1994 human remains were discovered at Ardnasillagh, near Oughterard, Co. Galway. The find was apparently reported to the Gardaí, who brought the remains to the Anatomy Department in University college, Galway. The find was not brought to the attention of the NMI while the remains were insitu, and there was therefore no opportunity to examine the site. No information is recorded as to the position of the skeleton when found (pers. comm. M. Cahill and M. Sikora, NMI).
