Architectural fragment in Castlelishen

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

Castlelishen holds a spiral-carved stone inside a gate pier, two hundred metres from its parent tower. The marker may have watched people pass for centuries before becoming a gate support. That change from identity to function is typical of Irish country estates, where useful parts were reused instead of discarded.
This stone, with a spiral motif carved in relief, is set into a gate pier c. 200m to SW of tower house (CO006-020001-) and probably originally came from it. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
