What is recorded here
Castle Hillock is a medieval motte and bailey where a natural mound was probably levelled into a defensive platform for the Stirlings or Strivelyns of Glenesk. The bailey stretched beside a deep ravine and ditched boundaries, while vaulted chambers were removed in the late 18th century. The site may have remained occupied until Edzell Castle was built, leaving behind a broad grassy knoll, faint ditch marks and a local story about a fatal pit hidden in the wet moat.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Edzell, Castle Hillock as Motte and Bailey (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
