Kinnaird Castle has housed Clan Carnegie since 1409, surviving the 1452 burning by Alexander Lindsay, 4th Earl of Crawford and a 1921 fire through repeated rebuilding. Kings James VI, Charles I and Charles II all stayed within its walls, while James Francis Edward Stuart sheltered there during the winter of 1715 before the estate was confiscated. The house has changed shape many times, yet it remains a working seat for the same family, carrying six centuries of loyalty, punishment and return in its stones.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Kinnaird Castle as Kennels (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
