Red Castle in Lunan stands as a blood-red ruin of freestone ashlar, built by William the Lion in the 12th century and besieged in 1579. Its four-storey keep still shows angle bartizans above a foreshore where roof slates and midden debris mark centuries of human life. The sea now eats the bank beneath it, taking a little more each storm, as if finishing what siege and time began.
