What is recorded here
Careston Castle is a 16th-century L-plan tower in Angus built by Sir Henry Lindsay, whose rooms still display chimney-pieces shaped like designs from Jacques Androuet du Cerceau's Second livre. Two wings are gone, one vault has been removed, and much of the ground floor is now storage, but the first and second floors keep four reception rooms, a library, six bedrooms and five bathrooms. The Adamson family owned it for 149 years before listing it for sale in 2021, leaving behind a house that is less complete than it once was but still unusually rich in detail.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Careston Castle as Cropmark(s) (period Unknown), Pit(s) (period Unknown), Rig and Furrow (medieval) - (post Medieval), Man-made underground passage (prehistoric)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Careston Castle is a medieval site associated with agricultural features such as rig and furrow, indicating its use during the medieval to post-medieval period. Its underground passage suggests possible defensive or ritual significance, though specific builders or occupants remain unidentified.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
