Barra Castle is a complicated L-plan fortress in Aberdeenshire where the King family lived from the mid 13th Century. Its main block points north-south with an east wing creating two re-entrants, one holding a circular stair-tower. An 18th Century addition completed a square forecourt bounded by a curtain wall and gatepiers probably dating from 1753. The formal garden to the south has faded into a terrace, a possible bowling green and corner summer houses.
