Barra Castle in Aberdeenshire is a fortified Laird's house where the King family lived from the mid 13th Century, though its main block probably dates to the early 17th Century. An 18th Century wing and gatepiers from 1753 completed the forecourt, while a formal garden with a bowling green and summer houses once stretched south of the castle. The circular stair-tower and re-entrant corners still suggest a place built for both domestic life and defence, where laundry, meals and watchkeeping would have shared the same stone walls.
