What is recorded here

Barra Castle is a fortified Laird's house in Aberdeenshire, built in the early 17th Century and expanded in the mid 18th Century with a formal walled garden. Its L-plan main block, circular stair-tower, and square forecourt show how a private home became a small defensive estate. The King family lived here from the mid 13th Century, so the castle likely grew from an older nucleus rather than appearing fully formed. Today its gatepiers, terrace, and remaining courtyard mark a place where domestic life, display, and caution were shaped into one stone address.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Barra Castle as Garden (mid 18th Century), Lairds House (early 17th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Barra Castle in Scotland was built as a laird's house in the early 17th century and later had a garden added in the mid-18th century. It is remembered as a historic domestic and landscape site reflecting the evolution of Scottish rural architecture and estate management.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
