Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Balquhain as Cup Marked Stone (prehistoric), Recumbent Stone Circle (neolithic) - (bronze Age). Balquhain is a Neolithic recumbent stone circle with associated cup marked stones, dating to around 2500–2000 BCE. Such sites are thought to have had ceremonial or astronomical significance, possibly linked to seasonal rituals or community gatherings.
