What is recorded here
Glenkindie House stands in Aberdeenshire as a layered mansion where a 1595 building was destroyed in 1644, later wings appeared in 1741 and 1787, and a new north house was built in 1900. Its open courtyard, conical towers, sundial and walled garden make it feel less like a ruined castle and more like a home that kept reinventing itself. During the Second World War, groups of the Timber Corps used it as a base and living quarters, adding another layer of ordinary life to its long history.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Glenkindie House as Castle (late 16th Century) - (mid 17th Century), Country House (17th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Glenkindie House was built as a castle in the late 16th century and later converted into a country house in the 17th century. It is remembered for its historical evolution and as a recorded site in Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
