Barra Castle in Aberdeenshire is a fortified Laird's house where the King family lived from the mid 13th Century, though its main block probably dates to the early 17th Century. An 18th Century wing and gatepiers from 1753 completed the forecourt, while a formal garden with a bowling green and summer houses once stretched south of the castle. Today only a terrace, fragments of cobbling and a cobbled drain remain of that garden, hinting at lessons played out on grass now lost.
