Barra Castle in Aberdeenshire is an excellent fortified Laird's house where the King family lived from the mid 13th Century. Its complicated L-plan contains a circular stair-tower, an 18th Century wing, and gatepiers probably dating from 1753. The lost garden leaves only a terrace, a possible bowling green, and one summer house behind the curtain wall.
