Rathmore

Rathmore Demesne stands in County Galway as a country house estate, yet its name preserves an older circular earthen ringfort that likely marked the land long before gardens and walls appeared. The estate may have swallowed that earlier monument without notice, a common fate for Irish landmarks when fashionable grounds were laid out. Whatever remains beneath the grass carries both layers: ancient human occupation and later Anglo-Irish settlement.
