What is recorded here

Rathduff was a circular ringfort on a low Mayo rise, visible on maps from 1838 to 1929 before ploughing removed its bank. That sudden erasure turns the site into a absent chamber, inviting imagination rather than certainty. The nearby forts and lost boundary suggest a small clustered settlement, perhaps human, perhaps something else entirely.

In undulating, wettish-average pasture, close to the townland boundary in the SE end of the townland, located on a low rise with a steep slope on the N side, with good views in all directions. This rath is named ‘Rathduff’ on the 1838 and 1929 OS 6-inch maps, where it is shown as a circular, ringfort-sized enclosure. It has been levelled, and is now evident as a roughly circular area (diam. c. 25m) of rough vegetation. According to local information, it was originally enclosed by a stony earthen bank, and a lot of stone and cockle shells were exposed when it was levelled.
