Rath Packing Company filled Waterloo, Iowa, with the smell of hogs and the rhythm of human hands from 1891 until 1985. It became the nation's largest meatpacking facility by 1941, sustained by world wars, bacon curing, and vacuum canning. The 1948 strike turned violent, killing a worker and overturning cars until the Iowa National Guard restored order. Employees took control in 1980, but losses continued and Rath closed in 1985, leaving behind a four-story plant that could not compete with newer single-level designs.
