What is recorded here
Gateway, extant 1921, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of lichen-spotted rusticated granite ashlar octagonal piers having ball finial-topped capping supporting arrow head-detailed wrought iron double gates with rusticated granite ashlar octagonal outer piers having ball finial-topped capping. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Rainsford Lodge.
A gateway not only making a pleasing visual statement in a sylvan street scene at the entrance on to the grounds of the Rainsford Lodge estate, but also clearly illustrating the continued development or "improvement" of the estate in the early twentieth century with robust stone work allegedly reclaimed from Borris House in neighbouring County Carlow (Rowe and Scallan 2004, 842).
This does not grant access. Most recorded buildings are privately owned; view them only from public ground unless the owner allows entry.
