Quarry in Carrownurlaur

Listed in both the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) and classified as 'Enclosure' and 'Ringfort (Rath/Cashel)' respectively. Indicated on the 1914 edition of the OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular depression (diam. c. 30m). In undulating pasture. When inspected in 2000 it was recorded that this is now evident as a square quarried out area (c. 26m N-S; c. 28m E-W). The N end of the W side, the N side and the E side of this sunken feature are dug directly into the natural slope producing high almost vertical inward facing scarps. The N side has the highest scarp (H 2.5-3m) while the lowest is at the S (H c. 1m). It serves as a sump for waste water from the house/farm situated up-slope to N. There is no evidence that this an archaeological monument. The remains of a rath (SL047-034----) lies a short distance to the SE.
