Quarrelwood Castle stood north-west of Elgin from the 14th century until the mid 18th century, passing through Lauder, Chisholm and Sutherland families before men stripped its stones for other buildings. Robert Lauder of the Bass raised it as Justiciar of Scotia, then marriage moved it from Ann Lauder to Robert Chisholm and later from Muriel Chisholm to Alexander Sutherland, 3rd of Duffus. William Duff of Dipple held it briefly before his daughter carried it to William Sutherland of Roscommon. After occupation ended, the castle became ruinous and local people took its material away, leaving only the memory of a house that kept changing hands until it gave up its shape entirely.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Quarrelwood Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
