What is recorded here
Duffus Castle is one of Scotland’s largest surviving Norman mottes, where a man-made mound still carries the weight of six centuries of conflict. Freskin began the wooden stronghold in the 1100s, but Reginald Cheyne later shaped the stone keep and curtain walls that remain visible today. The castle endured attacks from Edward I, the Douglas Clan, and Royalist forces before the Duffus family abandoned it in 1705, probably stripping its stones for a newer house. What is left is not a polished monument but a broken, living landscape where grass, memory and stone continue to argue about who owned the land and who forgot it.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Duffus Castle as No Class (event) (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Duffus Castle was built in the late 13th or early 14th century by the Keith family, a powerful noble lineage in Moray, Scotland. It is important as a well-preserved example of a medieval tower house and as a historical site associated with the region's feudal history.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
