Quakers Meeting Ho.

Situated on an rise of ground c. 150m to N of Main Street, in the town of Moate. In SW sector of the burial ground (WM030-113----) there is a partially surviving section of upstanding rubble built wall (L 7m E-W; H 3m) which represents the S wall of the Quaker meeting house. In the centre of the wall there is an arched doorway (Wth 2m x H 2.25m). There are three plaques on the wall. Two on the W side of the doorway. The first reads: “Site of friends meeting house AD 1694 By John Clibborn The Castle, Moate Taken down by order of Dublin meeting 1921.” The second plaque which is lozenge shaped reads: “Rebuilt in the year 1768.” A third plaque is visible on the wall to E of the doorway. This reads; “Built by John Clibborn Ad 1694.” The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) recorded that this 'graveyard and the remains of the meeting house (built 1694, rebuilt 1768 and largely demolished c.1930) was originally built by the Clibborn Family of Moate Castle (15317049). The Clibborns, along with other Quaker families such as the Homan and the Robinson families, were responsible for much of the growth and development of Moate and surrounding areas during the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries' (www.buildingsofireland.ie).
