What is recorded here
Promontory fort in County Donegal: a narrow coastal neck, 27 metres east-west and 13 metres north-south, with steep sea edges on most sides and a western entrance guarded by a 1.25 metre earthen bank beside a rock-cut fosse about 12 metres long and 5 metres wide. The fort used the coastline as much as its own works: height, distance and exposure did half the defending. People may have stood at the western gap watching boats, judging when to hide, fight or flee.
Internal dimensions 27m E-W, 13m N-S A neck of land defended by sharp drops on all but its W side where there is an earthen bank 1.25m high and a fosse about 12m long and 5m wide. The fosse is rock cut, some of the stone possibly being used for the facing on the outer side of the bank.
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
