What is recorded here
Half a kilometre of headland, cut free by a single straight ditch, still stands like a knife thrown into the sea. The foss is six metres wide and round-bottomed, but the bank has almost vanished, leaving only a low rise and a field fence to hint at the shape of the fort. What remains is a long narrow ridge of land, flanked by gullies and open to the north coast, where the view runs far along the water and the bog rises behind.
Situated along the N facing coast in an area of hilly bogland. Rising ground overlooks the site from the S. The headland is flanked by gullies into which streams flow on either side, and the view along the coast is excellent. A long narrow finger of land measuring 80m by 15m is cut off from the mainland by a short straight fosse running across the neck. This is 6m in width and is round-bottomed. A 1m high rise in the ground level immediately inside the fosse is the only trace of a bank. An earthen field fence runs along the outside of the fosse, obscuring any trace of a counterscarp bank. There is no trace of an entrance and the interior is featureless.
These descriptions are derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Unpublished MA thesis, National University of Ireland, Galway. In this instance the entry has been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
