Promontory fort — Report the wrong picture

Black Point is a small promontory on the E side of the entrance to Dingle Harbour. A wide fosse runs N-S across the landward side, and the upcast sand has been deposited on either side. Where least disturbed the fosse is 4m wide at base and rises 5m to the exterior and 2m to the interior. Towards the centre it widens out considerably, but this may be due to more recent disturbance. Sections of 2 stone walls and a pit are visible in the cliff face that bounds the interior. This may have been a promontory fort, or it may possibly have formed part of the 'small fort or block-house' which formely defended the harbour according to Smith (1756, 177).
