Prison Island is a small islet in Lough Scur, County Leitrim, where a roofless three-storey limestone tower still rises about five metres above mixed woodland. The building is traditionally attributed to John Reynolds of Castle John and said to have been built in 1612, yet its gun-loops, ladder-reached doorway and fireplaces point more convincingly to a watchtower than a prison. The name may have grown from older annalistic references to prisoners at Lough Scur rather than from the tower’s own design.
