No credible fact connects Clonroad Beg to a prison. The known Clare prison belonged to Ennis, where Patrick Morgan kept jailers in 1591 and a later gatehouse held prisoners from 1713.

Frost (1893, 251) notes that 'The English establised a jail at Ennis, appointed one Patrick Morgan, jailer, in 1591'. A reference from 1595 (Fiants, Eliz., 5726, 5965) to a gaol ‘lately erected’ is cited in Ó Dálaigh (2012, 15) along with several 17th-century references. Its location is uncertain although Kelly (1973-4, 66-9) states that it was in Arthur’s Row. According to Bradley, Halpin and King (1988, 52-3) the evidence for that location is unclear. A later prison was located in the gatehouse (CL033-082033-) at the S of the town from 1713. This earlier prison may also have been located there. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 13 May 2014
