Portora Castle guarded the narrow exit of the River Erne in County Fermanagh, where Sir William Cole built a strong stone house after purchasing the land in 1612. The castle later sheltered Sir Michael Cole and his family from 1710 to 1716, while the nearby ford carried peace and war traffic across the water. Ruins remain because boys from Portora Royal School blew up part of the structure with gunpowder during reckless experiments in the nineteenth century.
