What is recorded here

Portencross Castle stands as a medieval tower house on a rocky promontory in North Ayrshire, rebuilt in the mid-14th century by Robert Boyd after his grandfather received the estate following Bannockburn. The Boyds held the fortress until 1737, but a great storm stripped its roof in 1739, leaving the vaulted keep open to the sky where local fishermen may have continued working within its walls. Today the Friends of Portencross Castle maintain the restored structure as a museum, preserving the stubborn bones of a home that outlived its lords and the violence of the sea.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Portencross Castle as Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Portencross Castle, a medieval tower house located in Ayrshire, Scotland, was built in the late 15th or early 16th century by the Maxwell family, a powerful noble clan in the region. It is remembered for its strategic position along the Clyde Estuary and its association with the historical conflicts between the Maxwells and the Douglases, as well as its later use as a customs house in the 17th century.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
